Over the last two decades, we have seen a remarkable increase in entrepreneurship. The benefits of business ownership are immense and the transformation from employee to entrepreneur profoundly impacts how the world lives, works, learns, and enjoys leisure.
Start With an Entrepreneurial Mindset
It’s what you do that matters. There are seven desirable behaviours that will help you create an entrepreneurial mindset and put you on the path towards business ownership.
Be committed and determined. With these two behaviours, you can overcome incredible obstacles and compensate for weaknesses.
Have courage. Display moral strength and be fearless when it comes to experimentation.
Offer leadership. Be a self-starter who has high standards, and not a perfectionist. Treat others how you want to be treated and share your wealth with those who helped you to create it.
Be opportunity obsessed. Make sure that you have an intimate understanding of your customers’ needs and wants, and seek out opportunities to satisfy them.
Be tolerant of risk and uncertainty. Be a calculated risk taker and tolerate lack of structure. Make sure that you are able to resolve problems and integrate solutions.
Be creative and adaptable. It’s important for you to be a creative problem solver. Be open-minded and embrace nonconventional ideas.
Be motivated to excel. Have an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, while fostering a high desire for achievement and growth.
The Benefit of a Mentor
There is a strong connection between the existence of a role model or mentor and the success of an entrepreneur. If you don’t have one already, finding a role model or mentor should be at the top of your to-do list.
So, how do you find a role model or mentor that suits your personality and business? Write down the names of industry and community leaders who inspire you with their positive qualities. These can be people that you know and people that you don’t know personally. Think big and choose people that have a huge effect on your outlook and your actions. You can also look for people who have overcome similar challenges to your own.
Decide on one or two people from your list who you feel will make the greatest impact on your success, and reach out to them. If you have selected people within your community or business environment, there will be a good chance that they will agree to support you as a mentor.
Spend time with your role model or mentor, discuss your thoughts and their opinions, and share your aspirations. Most importantly, listen to their feedback and take action on areas that they suggest.
